Review by Booklist Review

Combining bright color photos with specific, simply stated facts, this introduction to the nature of rocks, crystals, the rock cycle, and how the three kinds of rock are formed slips nicely somewhere between Ann O. Squire's Rocks and Minerals (2002) and Trudi Trueit's Rocks, Gems and Minerals (2003). In a separate section at the end, Walker suggests ways for parents and teachers to share the book with budding naturalists. Walker's Fossils, published simultaneously, makes a natural and equally appealing companion. Other books in the Early Bird Earth Science series deal with topics such as erosion and minerals. --John Peters Copyright 2006 Booklist

Gr 2-4-These introductory titles follow a standard format of brief chapters of basic information with clear, relevant illustrations (mainly color photos) on every spread. The books begin with lists of words to identify in the text. The first title introduces "Planet Parts," "Moving Pieces," "Mountains, Cracks, and Holes," and "Making New Crust." The second one discusses how fossils are formed, as well as finding and studying them. The third title defines different types of rocks and discusses the rock cycle. The colorful layout is appealing. These titles are comparable to those in the "Earth Rocks!" series (Rosen) and will complement existing collections or be a good starting point for young readers.-Michael Giller, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Greenville (c) Copyright 2010. Review by Horn Book Review

These books provide standard information about the earth's materials and processes. Earth's Crust covers the broadest topics, such as tectonic plates, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Rocks and Fossils include straightforward descriptions of formation and major types. Aimed at younger readers, the information is accurate but thin. The stock color photographs support the text fairly well, with a few mismatches. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
