Review by Booklist Review
Straightforward and easy for young readers to follow, this volume in the National Geographic Science Chapters series dedicates each of six chapters to a different job performed by a working dog. Full-color, captioned photographs of various dogs at work help reinforce the text, which includes information on guide, service, customs, herding, search-and-rescue, and other types of working dogs. A two-page profile of a specific dog performing its task accompanies most chapters and effectively elaborates on the main text. Photos showcase the dogs' sweet and obedient temperaments, and these, along with the easy vocabulary in a large font, will draw children to the book. Slightly more sophisticated words, which appear in photo captions, can help readers broaden their vocabulary. Back matter includes a glossary and a list of resources that includes Web sites and further readings. --Roger Leslie Copyright 2006 Booklist
