Review by Library Journal Review

Like its second edition, which was published with the new millennium and also authored by Grenham, this book details the wealth of Irish genealogical resources available to researchers of all experience levels. The first section discusses how to begin an Irish research project and provides an overview of basic record sources like vital records, census records, church records, and property and valuation records. The second section addresses such things as wills, emigration records, directories, and occupational records and includes what is probably the most significant addition to the third edition a chapter on using the Internet to find Irish genealogical resources. This new chapter highlights major web sites that researchers are encouraged to explore to find general guides, organized lists of web sites like Cyndi's List and Genuki, sites with searchable records, surname sites, discussion groups, and commercial web sites like the Origins Network (www.originsnetwork.com). The third section includes updated county source lists covering census returns, local histories and journals, gravestone inscriptions, and estate records. This section also sports reconfigured maps for the Catholic parish listings, with parish records information now in alphabetical order within each county. New, too, is a compilation of variant Roman Catholic parish names. Grenham has also enhanced the chapter dealing with research services, societies, repositories, and publishers. Bottom Line Libraries owning the second edition will want to purchase this latest incarnation, owing mostly to its expanded listings and the inclusion of Irish Internet resources. All other libraries should consider purchasing as well. Elaine M. Kuhn, Allen Cty. P.L., Fort Wayne, IN (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
