Review by Library Journal Review

Since its original publication in England in 1996, Harrison's book has sold over 50,000 copies, and deservedly so. There are few outstanding, comprehensive books on this misunderstood medium. Pastels are relatively easy to pick up-there is no color pre-mixing to do, there are no brushes to handle, and the act of pastel drawing isn't separate from that of pastel painting. It is, however, a difficult medium to master. Fortunately, Harrison is both a master pastel artist and an experienced author of several instruction books. Unlike Anne Heywood's Pastels Made Easy, Harrison covers the complete spectrum of subjects, including portraits and figures. Among the eight major projects there are still lifes, interiors, flowers, landscapes, houses, and cityscapes, followed by a gallery of finished paintings illustrating different approaches and styles. Highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
