Because many gardeners have more shade than they can shake a shovel at, there is no shortage of books on shade gardening. This one, however, is a bit different. Instead of providing sample garden plans and lengthy lists of plants and their culture requirements, Wiley, a professional gardener, consultant, and nurseryman, engages the reader in conversation. As one reads, it is easy to imagine strolling through gardens with the author, listening to him comment on the various plants and groupings and share his horticultural wisdom. He addresses shade in various types of settings (e.g., woodland gardens) and discusses techniques for planting in shade, ending his shade coverage with a select list of shade plants that includes many common and a few not-so-common choices. If the photos (not seen) are half as magnificent as the galleys suggest, they will inspire gardeners everywhere to treasure their shady spots. Highly recommended for collections in areas where shady gardens are common. Beginners should supplement with a book that includes basic techniques and culture requirements for shade plants.-Janet A.
