Review by Booklist Review

Something very good in a small package: a natural history and practical ecology of the flying mammals that, next to wolves, must be the most unjustly persecuted creatures on earth. Tuttle writes clearly, genially, and succinctly about the bat's ways of life, its importance as a pest-controller and pollinator of valuable crops, its innocence as spreader of rabies and other diseases (dogs are exponentially more dangerous, in fact), ways to remove bats safely from where they're not wanted, and ways to welcome them where they are. The color photos and line drawings that profusely illustrate are top quality. Glossary, identification key to American bats, suggested readings list, index. -- Ray Olson
