PreS-Gr. 2. From the first close-up of an animal's eye and part of its face, this entertaining book will have children wanting to guess who I am. Each of eight foldouts opens to reveal a different, familiar animal--among them, a wolf, a turtle, a frog, and a skunk. The critter's name is printed in large, dark type in the upper right-hand corner of the spread, the text supplies a few bonus facts, and each illustration offers a glimpse of the next animal featured. In the raccoon spread, for example, children can see the tips of a bobcat's ears. The final foldout is especially rewarding; it includes a hidden pictures tableau of all eight animals in a wood around a lake. The gouache paintings energize the information in this book of fact-filled fun. --Connie Fletcher Copyright 2005 Booklist

The left-hand page text briefly describes an animal then asks ""Can you guess who I am?"" The right-hand page shows a painted close-up of the animal's eye that unfolds to reveal a realistic illustration of the whole animal. Manipulating the pages will engage youngsters. Older preschoolers may be unsatisfied with the limited facts, but they'll enjoy finding the additional hidden animals. (c) Copyright 2010.
