Excerpt from pg. 63: Fixed loops are often used as temporary hitches, to tie up a boat or ship, because they can be cast off and reused without the need to untie and retie them. They are also used to begin parcel ties and other lashings or seizings. Anglers use loops for the start of any tackle system, while climbers employ them as life support or rescue knots. Sliding loops--commonly referred to as nooses--must be used more selectively, as they will tighten when loaded, but may not readily slacken off again. Nooses that can be easily adjusted for size by hand, but which then lock up when loaded, make useful guy-lines for tents, flag poles and radio masts. They will also tension a washing line. 'The Bowline is the King of Knots because it is strong, secure, and versatile, as kings should be. And simple, as kings generally are.' --Brian Toss, The Rigger's Apprentice, 1984 Excerpted from Useful Knots by Geoffrey Budworth All rights reserved by the original copyright owners.
