Review by Library Journal Review

Of more than 200 existing books on calligraphy, by far the most difficult are those on Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy and painting both utilize the same variety of strokes-in fact, in China, painting is considered another form of calligraphy. Most who study Chinese calligraphy begin with a long apprenticeship in mastering the universe of strokes before putting them together to make characters. Yue, who began learning Chinese brush painting at the age of ten and studied for many years with three renowned masters, intersperses solid methodology with a variety of increasingly advanced characters. It's a great way to get-and keep-the student motivated. In this outstanding volume, she covers materials and equipment, preparation of the brushes, basic techniques, brush strokes, and lessons on the five classic styles of Chinese calligraphy. With its clear method and easy decorative projects (e.g., greeting cards and ceramic pots), it's ideal for the serious beginner. Highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010.
