Sidaway (The Instant Artist) has a good track record with art books for beginners, and here is a brief yet substantial one. He's particularly good at training an artist's eye for buildings, the kind of sensibility that allowed Andrew Wyeth to make such good use of plain vernacular farm structures. Sidaway's drawing tools include graphite pencil and stick, pastel pencils, charcoal, chalk, and pen and ink. In ten lessons he teaches linear perspective (including two-point perspective), proportion, composition, and how to capture such textures as brick, stone, concrete, wood, glass, and steel. Recommended for general collections. For the same subject using watercolors, see Richard Taylor's The Watercolorist's Guide to Painting Buildings. (c) Copyright 2010.
