Review by Library Journal Review

Coetzee, a British multi-instrumentalist with a bachelor's degree in music composition, has written a series of comprehensive instructional guidebooks for music enthusiasts considering taking up an instrument. In these similarly formatted entries (see also Saxophone & Clarinet), he describes each instrument's historical origins and how it works and offers an accessible explanation of the language of music notation, the anatomy of proper posture, and various playing positions and techniques. How to practice, develop listening skills, build a collection of recorded music, find a teacher, and purchase and care for an instrument are also addressed. These guides are beautifully and generously illustrated with color photographs and include several compositions (with playing notes) that represent a spectrum of standard repertoire, composers, and musical styles, from Baroque and classical to the newer sounds of jazz and popular music. They also provide a glossary of musical terms, useful web sites, and further readings. Those wanting to learn to play the piano or violin seriously should first look to more traditional guides (e.g., any by Hal Leonard) featuring progressive exercises and melodies, which Coetzee's books lack. Still, these are good overviews with plenty of pertinent information. Highly recommended for larger public and academic libraries.-Elizabeth M. Wavle, Elmira Coll. Lib., NY (c) Copyright 2010.
