Review by Booklist Review
Gr. 1-3. Canines that have a dog's life, both literally and metaphorically, are the focus of this engaging entry in the Farm Animals series. Text in large, bold type succinctly explains a high-interest category of dog: A working dog is not a pet. Working dogs are kept by farmers to do farmwork. It then discusses features common to all dogs and provides specifics about working dogs' care and training, their responsibilities, and their most common breeds. Dalgliesh's use of the word bitch will surely induce distracting titters, and simplifications of technical terms (like referring to nutrients as the good parts of food) oddly coexist with multisyllabic vocabulary. Still, many new readers will find the topic appealing, especially in light of the small but numerous photos of darling puppies, perky trainees, and energetic, capable professionals. --Jennifer Mattson Copyright 2005 Booklist
