Review by Booklist Review
PreS-K. Bright, simple acrylic paintings illustrate this Green Light Reader about a small snake with growing pains. Little Sid the snake can't play with his pals; he is convinced that he is sick. Then his mother reassures him that he is just growing up, and sure enough, his rattle emerges. A delighted Sid shares his news with his friends, and the big-kid snakes proudly show off their rattles, too, just as a circle of kindergartners might compare lost or emerging teeth. Carter writes basic, simple sentences, with plenty of repetitive sounds, lively dialogue, and monosyllabic vocabulary. The format, which divides the text into two chapters, includes questions to be shared with a more competent reader and a craft project. The youngest readers will enjoy the story's comforting messages about growing up as they work their way through the pages and look to the stylized, uncluttered pictures for clues to the action. --Gillian Engberg Copyright 2005 Booklist

Sid the snake panics when he begins to molt, until his mother explains he's not sick but growing. He then happily shows off his new rattle to his friends. Though the book is unnecessarily split into two chapters, the text's word repetition will encourage new readers, while bright pastel illustrations will keep them engaged. Superfluous reading questions and activities are appended. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. All rights reserved.
