One of the world's leading authorities on old roses, Beales is the author of Classic Roses, which is considered by many to be the definitive history of old roses and an essential reference for the rose lover. His many fans will greet this further exploration of his half-century obsession with these beautiful plants. In 1951, at the age of 15, Beales began working as an apprentice at the famous LeGrice Nurseries in Norfolk, England. There, his love of roses developed and eventually led to him opening his own rose nursery in the mid-1960s. Here he writes about his world travels to seek out beautiful rose gardens as well as develop his own. Most of the book, however, covers the six major types of roses and profiles the best cultivars in each category; the last section is a plant directory that for every rose mentioned includes a color photo, description, hardiness zones, and cultural advice. This beautiful book is amply illustrated with 450 color photographs by celebrated garden photographer Marianne Majerus. Recommended for public libraries and all horticultural collections.-Phillip Oliver, Univ. of North Alabama Lib., Florence (c) Copyright 2010.
