Gr. 1-3. From the On My Own Holidays series, this colorful book describes the celebration of Chinese New Year, which is also called the Spring Festival. Among the topics discussed are the Chinese zodiac, traditional symbols of the new year, family feasts and traditions for the holiday, and community activities, such as parades. On nearly every page, illustrations depict people of all ages preparing for and celebrating Chinese New Year. A short glossary is appended. Clearly written, informative, and child-centered without talking down to children, this provides a good introduction to the holiday. Another title in the series is Easter around the World. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2005 Booklist

Each author provides a detailed explanation of the featured holiday or, in the case of Easter, describes how the holiday is celebrated in diverse lands, from Sweden to Ethiopia to Colombia. Some books' illustrations are less accomplished than others, but the short sentences in these thorough offerings are just right for beginning readers. Chinese and Cinco contain glossaries. [Review covers these On My Own Holidays titles: Veterans Day, Easter around the World, Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo.] (c) Copyright 2010.
