Review by Library Journal Review

The art world is awash in books on oil and watercolor painting but parched for those on acrylics. This one, originally published in Spain, is a fine addition to the field. Acrylics are plastic-based pigments that can imitate the qualities of other media, while retaining a distinct brightness of their own. Although compact, this volume is both comprehensive and spirited. A brief history of the use of acrylics by people such as Jackson Pollack is followed by sections on the varieties of acrylics available, tools for their use, and techniques for skies, vegetation, landscapes, still lifes, interiors, animals, and the nude. The demonstrations of color mixing, sgraffito, texturing, transparent impastos, and layering with glazes are especially well done. Highly recommended for advanced art students. For beginners, see Jenny Rodwell's Acrylic Workbook: A Complete Course in Ten Lessons. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
