PreS-Gr. 2. Henry's gigantic, beloved hound Mudge is part of every scene in the twenty-fourth Ready-to-Read chapter book about their adventures. This time the focus is on Henry's bond with his dad as they plan and prepare a funny-food meal for Mother's Day. Everyone loves Mudge, and everything is wonderfully idyllic with friends, family, and the small-town community. The best chapter is about shopping for ingredients; Mudge is welcome in the supermarket, where he has a great time sniffing at the shelves and grabbing a toddler's candy. Bracken's clear pen-and-ink and watercolor pictures also show the intriguing funny-food concoctions Dad and Henry whip up--from a Sweet Potato Shoe and a Tomato Snowman to a Pineapple Sofa--which are bound to get kids laughing, reading, and maybe cooking, too. --Hazel Rochman Copyright 2004 Booklist

Henry and his dad always make a crazy lunch for Mom on Mother's Day. This year, they create a pineapple sofa, complete with a reclining fruit family. They plan, shop, and cook, all with trusty Mudge at their side, and the lunch is a hit. These funny meal plans, paired with lighthearted illustrations, are sure to capture readers' imaginations.
