Gr 4-8-These introductory titles have an open and appealing layout with large type and an abundance of full-color photographs and diagrams. Baxter defines her subject and describes many different types of reactions, including acid-base reactions, oxidation, and photosynthesis. The explanations are clear and succinct. The final chapter presents some potential uses for chemical reactions, citing the development of molecular computers. Juettner gives an overview of the building blocks of elements and compounds, including atoms, molecules, and the various states of matter, and describes their characteristics. The last chapter offers information on some extreme materials, such as plasma and the recently discovered Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC).
