Emmett's pig

Mary Stolz, 1920-2006

Book - 2004

Emmett loves pigs. What he wants most of all is a real pig, even though his parents have explained that he can't keep one in the city apartment where they live. But as Emmett's birthday draws near, he feels his dream may finally come true. Mary Stolz's warm story, first published in 1959, is a timeless classic. Garth Williams's original illustrations appear now in full color with help from renowned artist Rosemary Wells.

Review by Booklist Review

K-Gr. 2. First published in 1959, this I Can Read Book features Emmett, a city boy who longs for a real pig, which he plans to name King Emmett. The story's original illustrations were pencil drawings with washes of peach and green. In this edition, Williams' wonderful art is intact, but replacing the two light tints is a full spectrum of richer colors applied by Rosemary Wells, who uses the exact paints Williams had available to him in the 1950s, in a palette chosen from his color work in other books. Wells' respectful approach results in a successful rejuvenation of this gentle story. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2004 Booklist

Originally published in 1959 as a Harper I-Can-Read book, Emmett's Pig was reissued in 2003 as a full-size picture book with art colorized by Rosemary Wells. The book is reissued here with its original text in an easy-reader format and trim size, but Williams's art still suffers from the unnecessary colorization. (c) Copyright 2010.
