A Light to My Path is a standalone follow-up to Candle in the Darkness and Fire by Night in Austin's Refiner's Fire series, with alternating points of view between two characters. Anna, nicknamed Kitty, grows up as a slave companion to Missy Claire, the daughter of a plantation owner, and Grady is a young light-skinned slave torn from his parents at an early age. The tale focuses on their love, pain, sorrow, degradation, and humiliation. Lacking knowledge of any other way of life, Anna solemnly accepts her ill-treatment and exploitation, while Grady, filled with hatred and rage, longs for freedom. When Grady and Anna eventually have the chance to run away to join the Union Army, Anna is paralyzed by her fear of the unknown and remains at the plantation believing she will not face hardship or punishment. Read by Christina Moore, this compelling story of slavery in South Carolina from 1849 through the Civil War is recommended for historical Christian fiction collections.--Carol Stern, Glen Cove P.L., NY (c) Copyright 2010.
