PreS-A very quiet farmer doesn't speak throughout the day but bids a fond "goodnight" to all of his animals at bedtime. From an early morning rising that begins with a rooster's crow, he goes about the business of taking care of his land and creatures. All the while, the onomatopoeic sounds he makes as he works are highlighted in the appealing pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations. Going beyond animal calls, the author familiarizes youngsters with many different noises: the "Sizzle," "Bubble-de-blip," and "Gurgle" of breakfast being made; the "Click-clack" of the mower; and the "Whop-whop-bang" of a fence being repaired. This tale features smiling animals, sunshiny scenery, and an enviably contented man who enjoys his lot in life. With pictures bright and large enough to share with a group, this is a pleasant introduction to farm life and a variety of sounds.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI (c) Copyright 2010. A very quiet, kindly farmer goes about his daily chores amidst squawking animals, clanging pots, and myriad other raucous farm and farmhouse noises. The text is a bit ho-hum, but children will relish chiming in with their own ""cock-a-doodle-doo"" and ""snee-snort."" Chicken-scratch drawings are filled with color and personality. When the sun first sheds its light on the farm, the quiet patch of land is bestirred by the exuberant "Cock-a-doodle-doo" of the resident rooster. The farmer awakens and begins his day with a "squeak" and a "creak." This tale is more than just a tour of a farm hosted by a grandfatherly farmer, though; it's a rural orchestra. Standing out in large jaunty letters are the everyday noises of the farm. More than just animal utterances, although there are plenty of moos and oinks, there are also the "lip-lap" of cat's milk and "bubble-de-blip" of oatmeal simmering. While the farmer goes about his duties, the day is bursting with auditory treats. The farmer shows deep love with his actions, but he hasn't uttered a sound. "At last he speaks with words." The farmer bestows a fond goodnight on his animals and the elements alike. The illustrations are rhapsodic, bursting with color, activity, and detail. This is a warm-hearted story that hints at the importance of symbiosis--and has a jolly good time doing it. (Picture book. 3-6) Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
