Barrette (Going on a Journey to the Sea) takes Markes's (Sidewalk ABC) rather pedestrian gratitude list ("Thanks for Thanksgiving,/ for turkey and pie./ Thank you for fall/ and gold leaves floating by") and paints a warm portrait of a family. The artist portrays boy and girl siblings who look out for their toddler brother, pushing him on a swing, giving him a piggyback ride. The children also express appreciation for pets, puddles, cuddles and tuck-in kisses. The artwork alone may well draw readers into this welcoming clan, especially as the family sits down with guests to a festive meal on the final spread. Ages 3-7. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Thanks for Thanksgiving, / for turkey and pie. / Thank you for fall / and gold leaves floating by."" This grab bag of gratitude reserves its largest and last helping ""for the family I love!"" Trying to get kids to be thankful is commendable, but the rhymes are pedestrian, and the cartoony faces of the children fight with the meticulously detailed backgrounds. (c) Copyright 2010. Review by Kirkus Book Review

A charming look at a traditional and contemporary Thanksgiving celebration offers youngsters a chance to share their thanks for everything from play to family, kisses to piggyback rides. "Thank you for school--I love to feel smart!" Nothing seems to be missing--except perhaps a mention of grandma and grandpa, though they are at the table--in this thoughtful and lively recitation of all things for which one is thankful. Easy-to-read large black type will attract the very youngest of readers. Barrette's watercolors are inspired--reflecting and embellishing--with children, not quite perfect, endearing animals, and fun-filled scenes full of details, from drawer handles to table decorations. Each double-paged spread seems worthy of being framed as a piece of whimsical art. A perfect offering for inspiring one's own list of thankful thoughts.
