Review by Library Journal Review
Several books teach impressionist oil painting, but this is the first comprehensive volume on impressionist watercolor. Fortunately, this one is based on the work of a master, Boynton, who teaches at the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of art in America. The book begins with an analysis of just what Impressionism is and how artists like Monet and Childe Hassam created their stunning, light-filled works. Boynton reveals the impressionist watercolor methods he has developed, moving from the basics of choosing and mixing the right colors, to identifying light and shadow masses, to advanced composition and the painting of reflective glass, metal, and ceramic surfaces. While the teaching methods, theory, and demonstrations are wholly Boynton's, coauthor Gottlieb made significant contributions to the text. As his former student, she brings an objective, clarifying eye to a complex subject. Highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
