Review by Library Journal Review
Petterson and Gale, who previously collaborated on Printmaking for Beginners and Monotype, have a passion for the printed image, which comes through in this inspiring volume. With a brief, clear text and excellent step-by-step illustrations, they include everything from carrot and potato prints to the advanced techniques of metal-plate lithography, aquatints, woodcuts, and collagraphs. Each project includes a full list of tools and materials required, and each is followed by a gallery of artists' prints from the Artichoke Print Workshop, London. The techniques are divided into two sections. The first encompasses techniques that can be carried out at home with basic equipment using hand-printing methods or a simple bookbinder's press. The second section focuses on techniques requiring a more sophisticated printing press. This introductory book is highly recommended for popular collections; a more academic approach can be seen in Susan Lambert's Prints: Art and Techniques. (c) Copyright 2010.
