Review by Booklist Review
In Australia quilting translates into a similar kind of fabric sandwich as the U.S.--except, perhaps, in the materials available. At least that's the impression given by Kooler of the eponymous design studio, collaborating with Chapelle to introduce novices to this stitching art. It is, in fact, the same format as other beginner crafts tomes from Chapelle: a series of questions (in this case, 23) answered by text and by projects (15 designs here). The three sections--basics, techniques, and beyond the basics--follow the reader's need to know, from materials and equipment to easy-to-copy patterns and, finally, more complicated projects. That could mean starting with a simple tied scrap quilt, progressing to a hand-appliqued Baltimore quilted pillow, and the graduate course, such as a crazy-quilt stocking. As to be expected, instructions are almost goofproof, accompanied by charts, illustrations, and color photographs. Appended are a glossary and a metric equivalency chart. --Barbara Jacobs Copyright 2003 Booklist
