Gr. 3^-6, younger for reading aloud. Using an oversize, horizontal format and panoramic artwork, this condensation of the New Testament, with Grindley's narrative opening each chapter, offers children a swiftly moving account that will bring them the story of Jesus, if not necessarily the heart of his message. The extracts are from the New International Version of the Bible, and Grindley freely adapts from each gospel, with small icons on each spread indicating from which book (in general) the text has been drawn. The story moves rapidly, from Jesus' birth and boyhood, through his ministry, with the highlights of his preaching, and the parables (the two most understandable to children, the story of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son). Jesus' arrest (Grindley's narrative makes Pilate look particularly good), crucifixion, and resurrection end the book.The watercolor artwork, despite a slightly generic look, uses bold perspectives and plenty of shadow and light to heighten the drama. For those who wish to stay closer to home, the paper-over-board The Gardening Book by Jane Bull offers approaches to gardening "with or without a garden." The author begins with the basics, suggesting that gravel line the bottom of a planter to keep the roots from getting soggy. Photographs illustrate her ideas for year 'round "Pocket Plots" (miniature gardens that fit on the lid of a jar) as well as classic flower and vegetable gardens. Warm, impressionistic illustrations, framed with brief excerpts of scripture, flow across each double-page spread like murals. Culled from the four Gospels, the text skillfully avoids most denominational doctrines. The focus is on Jesus' ministry and teachings, crucifixion, and resurrection.
