Review by Choice Review

Psychiatrist Mondimore has written other books on mood disorders, including one for patients and families; this one comprehensively guides parents of adolescents with depression. His goal is to help parents better understand the various forms of depression in adolescence. Part 1 addresses the normal and abnormal mood swings of adolescence, symptoms and diagnosis of depression, and why depression is frequently overlooked in teenagers. Part 2 focuses on treatment including various medications, electrical stimulation, and psychotherapies. Part 3 discusses related conditions, such as ADHD, eating disorders, and alcohol and substance abuse, which may complicate diagnosis and treatment. Part 4 provides strategies for successful treatment and minimizing relapses, the role of family in diagnosis and treatment, and planning for emergencies. The book concludes with a list of resources for the family. The author defines scientific terms as they are introduced and uses figures and tables to summarize and clarify information. Case studies are incorporated to illustrate specific content. Endnotes. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. General readers; lower-division undergraduate through graduate students; professionals. M.
