Ages 2-6. Four-line verses depict 10 mice frolicking in the countryside, then, one by one, departing "home to [their] cozy nest," rather like a counting book in reverse. Lively action words abound, yet there is an abruptness to the cadence that is somewhat jarring. Clearly it is the illustrations that sweep the adventure along. Majewska couples meticulous craftsmanship with exuberance; her verdant fields and flower-studded meadows sing with color, and her realistically rendered mice add dimension--youngsters will almost feel the bristling of their tiny whiskers as they scurry and scamper. While this visual treat is a credit to Majewska's talent, her work deserves to be teamed with an equally strong text. --Phillis Wilson

Ten appealingly furry and impeccably clean mice are gamboling in the lush landscape of the countryside until, one by one, each finds an excuse to head homeward to his cozy nest, thus providing an exercise in subtraction. Large, full-color illustrations lend a pleasantly old-fashioned tone. From HORN BOOK 1990, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. One by one, as described in unexceptional rhyme, these very different mice go home to their ""cozy nest."" What's captivating here is the meticulous precision of Majewska's lovely illustrations, depicting the flora and fauna of the woods and fields where the mice roam.
