Children are invited to join Timothy, Yoko and their classmates as they practice math skills in Adding It Up, the latest addition to the Get Set for Kindergarten! series, based on Timothy Goes to School and other stories by Rosemary Wells. Adding, subtracting and counting to 20 are covered so are shapes and patterns as the students in Mrs. Jenkins's class make use of mathematics in real-life situations. Each section offers suggestions for extending each concept. Ready to Read helps youngsters learn letter/sound correlation plus capital and lower case letters. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-K-These books take readers into a classroom with Timothy, Nora, and Yoko; six other students; and their teacher, Mrs. Jenkins. Adding covers counting, sorting, graphs, adding and subtracting equations, money, etc. Read focuses on the alphabet (upper- and lowercase), letter and sound recognition, rhyming, context clues in sentence structure, simple story writing, etc. One quibble, though-when using a method of eliminating one picture that doesn't belong to a group based on a letter sound, Wells groups the picture in columns that go from top to bottom rather than in rows from left to right as she does in her example. This might present some initial confusion and does not reinforce the traditional left-to-right eye movement in reading. Both books include a section at the bottom of each spread, "The Next Step," which suggests activities for extending the concept. Koelsch's endearing color illustrations complete the packages. These titles will make great introductory and curriculum-support books for preschoolers soon to enter kindergarten.-Rita Soltan, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI (c) Copyright 2010. Review by Horn Book Review

Rosemary Wells's familiar characters are used to teach parents how to prepare their children for school. The books enumerate the basics of math, science, pre-reading, and community awareness. The slight stories about Timothy and his friends are just an excuse for the teaching activities. Despite the format, these are books for adults.
