DC offers up a deluxe edition of this Eisner Award-winning Batman tale starring villainess Harley Quinn. This Dini and Timm story, first published a decade ago, charts the origin of Joker's erstwhile henchwoman. "Mad Love" is an apt description of psychiatrist-turned-criminal Quinn's infatuation with the Joker, the ultimate in emotionally unavailable men. As befits the "Batman Adventures" series, this whole charade is played for laughs, but it isn't a work for kids, despite the bright colors and gags as the voluptuously drawn Quinn's love veers into the seductive at one point-Quinn in a nightie, anyone? Harley ultimately decides to win the Joker's love by doing the one thing that the Joker hasn't been able to accomplish-killing Batman. This hardcover deluxe edition includes a foreword by Dini and an afterword by Timm, as well as an extensive "making of" section with preliminary panels for the entire work. Verdict The Eisner Award gives this rerelease all the praise it needs. Any library that doesn't own the original would do well to add this edition to their collections.-Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Lib., Wisconsin Rapids © Copyright 2015.
