Review by Choice Review

Howard Hong and Edna Hong have long been among the most trusted commentators on the work of Srren Kierkegaard. In this volume they provide a three-page introduction to Kierkegaard that will be helpful to students as well as to professional philosophers. The introduction stresses Kierkegaard's roles as a modern analyst of the importance of the spiritual and moral development of the individual: e.g., "In a time of disintegration of the family, [Kierkegaard's] portrayal of the meaning of marriage is refreshing and invigorating." The volume begins with a selection of entries from Kierkegaard's journals and his From the Papers of One Still Living and ends with selections from his last published separate piece, The Changelessness of God. A total of 31 selections make up the volume, some drawn from The Concept of Irony, Either/Or, Fear and Trembling, Repetition, Philosophical Fragments, Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions, Stages on Life's Way, Works of Love, Christian Discourses, The Lily in the Field, The Sickness Unto Death, For Self Examination, and On My Work as an Author. Recommended for upper-division undergraduates through faculty and researchers; and for general readers. M. C. Rose emeritus, Goucher College
