Veteran author Hogan, son of a Missouri town marshal, died in 1998 at age 89. Thanks to Five Star's commitment to unearthing unpublished or little-known works by classic western authors, fans can enjoy two more of his stories. The title story went unpublished because its locale was 1851 Cuba, not the American West. It is coupled here with Fire River, a short novel originally published as Return to Rio Fuego under the pseudonym Clay Ringold. It tells of Joel Kane's return to his father's ranch where Cass Berryman, trying to steal the place, holds the old man prisoner. Father and son, estranged for years, reunite to save what's theirs. In Guns of Freedom, American Cain Ruby must infiltrate Spanish defenses in Cuba to pave the way for an invasion and rescue lovely Annette DuRique, a visitor from New Orleans now trapped by a Spanish embargo. When the invasion fails, Cain and Annette remain to help the Cubans fight for freedom. Good stuff from a "top hand." --Budd Arthur
