Review by School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 3-This charming adventure is the 19th installment of the classic beginning-to-read series by Cynthia Rylant (S&S, 1999). Henry and his Dad, and his big dog Mudge, enter a snowman contest in the park. The topic, pace, and humorous conclusion of this high-interest tale will satisfy readers and listeners alike. The female narrator speaks slowly and clearly, making it easy for beginning readers to follow along. The narration is supported by wintry-sounding music and appropriately subtle sound effects. Using the book and tape together promotes independent reading and is an entertaining way to improve reading skills. The ten-minute length is good for limited attention spans and provides a sense of accomplishment when completed. Youngsters will want to listen to the tape and read along again and again, each time becoming a bit more confident. This is an excellent production for pre-readers and beginning readers.-Maura Smith, Somerset Elementary School, Prairie Village, KS (c) Copyright 2010.
