Ages 1^-4. Young children who "love" truck books will certainly enjoy this. The straightforward, rhyming text is as direct and purposeful as its subject, and the clearly defined drawings, with flat colors and bold black outlines, fill the wide pages with simplified shapes of trucks in action. Best of all, text and illustrations work well together, each doing what the other cannot and both contributing to the overall upbeat tone, celebrating good work and good fun. The inclusion of women truck drivers offers a more balanced picture of the gender roles than the many older truck books still on library shelves. Depending on demand, consider ordering multiple copies of this satisfying title. --Carolyn Phelan

I Love Trucks! by Philemon Sturges, illus. by Shari Halpern, now in paperback, shows bright and colorful black outlined illustrations of a tow truck, a street sweeper and a backhoe in action. From the same team and in the same format ("I like trains that hoot and roar/ as they rumble by my door"), I Love Trains! demonstrates a flatcar carrying a veiled massive airplane ("secret stuff that's under wrap"), among other cargo. PreS-For toddlers with an insatiable appetite for trucks, this is a perfect choice. Vehicles that crawl, roll, dig, dump, mix concrete, gobble trash, and do a multitude of other things are depicted in simple rhyming language and big, bold illustrations outlined in black. On the front and end pages are facts about different kinds of trucks that will fascinate slightly older children.
