Bryce Canyon National Park

Gr 2-3‘Attractive covers and large-print type should draw young readers to these titles. The information will be interesting to those who are not familiar with either park. Vocabulary is appropriate for the subjects, but there is no indication in the texts as to which words appear in the brief glossaries. Many of the color photos in Death Valley are rather dark while several in Bryce Canyon lack reference points to help define size. Captions on most of the photos merely duplicate what has already been stated. Introductions to three national parks blandly present information, including physical characteristics, animal life, and historical and contemporary significance. Occasional full-page 'sidebars' are useful, but a busy design makes them hard to read. One sidebar, about rare desert pupfish, includes no photo or drawing of the animal.
