Review by Booklist Review
Though it was published in 1937 and its author, Napoleon Hill, died more than a quarter century ago, Think and Grow Rich is still popular today and is the best-selling business self-help book of all time. It has never been out of print, but it is an elusive title to find in most libraries. Hill's teachings are now kept alive through a foundation bearing his name, which has sponsored contemporary updates of Hill's work. Originally (in 1952), though, Chicago insurance tycoon W. Clement Stone set up Napoleon Hill Associates to publish and distribute Hill's work. Ritt was its first employee and he now serves on the board of the Napoleon Hill Foundation. He is also coauthor of A Lifetime of Riches (1995), a laudatory but nonetheless candidly revealing biography of Hill. Now Ritt distills the essence of Hill's philosophy. The key is positive thinking, represented by "positive mental attitude," or PMA; and Ritt explains the theory and history behind PMA. --David Rouse

This self-help manual amplifies the principles first promulgated in Hill's Think and Grow Rich. Although he died more than 20 years ago, Ritt worked with him for two decades and adequately conveys Hill's philosophy of personal growth in this clearly written if simplistic guide to positive thinking. According to the authors, a positive mental attitude (PMA) is the key to releasing the creative energy within. Once achieved, PMA is said to ensure success in business and in personal relationships. To achieve PMA, the authors recommend a 10-step formula that includes living the golden rule, utilizing prayer, setting goals, learning tolerance, focusing on positive images and eliminating negative thoughts. Each chapter includes instructions and exercises for mastering a step, as well as a self-test to rate the progress made. (Jan.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
