Madison, director of family support and psychological services at Omaha's Children's Hospital, provides a structure on which parents of young children can build a philosophy of discipline. According to Madison, successful parenting is based on commitment to one's children, respect between parent and child, trustworthiness, and technique. In the first two-thirds of the book, she outlines the behavioral expectations for children at each age level (infant, crawler, walker, talker) and shows how techniques such as positive reinforcement, time out, and tokens can be used to create a positive environment. In the final third of the book, Madison addresses problem behaviors (biting, tantrums, lying) and potential problem situations (eating out, divorce, babysitters) and shows how to apply the techniques discussed earlier in each case. This is a positive and encouraging book for parents and others who care for young children. Highly recommended.Kay L. Brodie, Chesapeake Coll., Wye Mills, MD (c) Copyright 2010.
