Review by Booklist Review
These four early entries in Abrams' Art of the State series provide valuable information at good value for public-library collections. Similarly organized, the volumes offer general historical and cultural background as well as specific coverage on art and artists. The texts feature competent overviews on such topics as the state's geography, history, commerce and culture, and literary heritage, all illustrated with pertinent works from local artists. Separate chapters are given to contemporary artists and to the state's best-known artist (e.g., Grant Wood for Iowa, Georgia O'Keeffe for New Mexico). Illustrations, largely in full color, reflect the publisher's impeccable reputation for quality. Lists of "Great People" from the state, concentrating on the arts, are appended. Ideal for small libraries, this series possesses considerable reference value in any setting. --Bill Ott
