Gr. 4^-8. Two attractive reference guides in the Your World Explained series provide focused introductions to scientific subjects. They explain the facts, the principles, and the connections through a clear, detailed text and full-color artwork and photographs. Each double-page spread is a self-contained section. The book on dinosaurs begins with general topics, such as when they lived, how they ate and moved around, and why they disappeared; then there are sections on particular types and species. The book on space begins with how forces such as gravity work and then looks in turn at the parts of the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way, and other galaxies. Both books have glossaries, though most terms are explained in the text. Libraries will have shelves of books on these subjects, but the combination of the big picture and the small detail helps bring the science close to hand. --Hazel Rochman

DINO-MITE Informative and well designed, Prehistoric Life Explained: A Beginner's Guide to the World of Dinosaurs by Jinny Johnson leavens the usual dinosaur facts and figures with a clear and accessible text. Detailed color drawings depict skeletons, fossils, maps and of course dinosaurs in all their reptilian glory. The chapters are organized under the headings "Living Dinosaurs," which includes a chapter on "Family Life"; "Discovering Dinosaurs," which presents the findings of paleontologists; and "The Ruling Reptiles," which organizes dinosaurs by family rather than by period. A glossary explains all terminology, and an index enables quick reference. (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Review by Horn Book Review

This rather conventional dinosaur book offers an overview of dinosaur life, a discussion of the process of fossil hunting, and a description of the major dinosaur families. Both the text and illustrations are competent but bland. The one unusual and interesting feature is the inclusion of the mammal-like reptiles, a seldom featured but fascinating group of animals.
