Review by Library Journal Review

Much preferring a challenging homicide, Morse is decidedly disgruntled when he is told to investigate the disappearance of an adolescent school girl. But he has only to be patient, it turns out; in due course, a body is found with a knife in its back. As he pursues the killer beyond his familiar Oxford, Morse--one of the most human and flawed investigators in modern crime fiction--makes a few serious mistakes before the pieces finally fall into place. With a fine narration by British actor Michael Pennington, this 1978 mystery is just the ticket for Morse fans who enjoyed The Jewel That Was Ours (Audio Reviews, LJ 8/92) and The Riddle of the Third Mile (Audio Reviews, LJ 11/15/92) . -- Jo Carr, Sarasota, Fla.(c) Copyright 2010.
