This book is filled with excellent color photographs and snappy descriptions of cottages in the San Francisco Bay Area, ranging from tiny backyard cottages now surrounded by apartment buildings to "arks" (houseboats). The boats are landlocked and compare easily to cottage housing, since, in both, the dweller must make enterprising use of limited space. Sexton's photo-essay on California-style cottages will appeal to architects, decorators, and others interested in creating colorful, personal domiciles. --Denise Perry Donavin
