Review by Booklist Review

The 20th edition of this venerable medical-reference source has grown, with 36 new chapters and 40 percent revised material. The thumb-indexed sections are organized by broad subject areas, then divided by topic. Chapters on specific diseases and conditions provide an overview, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, and key points. Entries contain quite technical medical terminology. A table of the abbreviations used appears at the beginning of the book, and a series of appendixes offers ready-reference guides, normal laboratory values, and brand names of commonly used drugs. A detailed index helps to locate material. The editor notes that the online version is continuously updated, and users are encouraged to check there for the latest information since medicine is constantly changing; the manual is also available as an app. At merckmanuals.com, there is a free consumer-health version that uses less technical language, is easy to understand, has color illustrations and current medical news in addition to information about diseases and conditions, and is available in several languages. Both versions are excellent choices for public, academic, consumer-health, and medical libraries.--Bibel, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist
