Review by Booklist Review
Griffin's fifth book in his novelistic series about the U.S. Marines Corps is centered mainly on the World War II battle for Guadalcanal, from August through September of 1942. But not only Guadalcanal: in keeping with the form of preceding volumes, Line of Fire is vast in geographical scope, with action occurring in such diverse and far-flung locations as Australia; the Japanese-held island of Buka in the Solomon Sea; Parris Island, South Carolina; and Washington, D.C. The cast is appropriately large and liberally stocked with brave heroes, beautiful heroines, and assorted tough guys, and their adventures are rendered in the wry, salty narrative voice ex-soldiers like Griffin so often employ when they turn to writing. Aside from a curious scarcity of battle scenes, the book is a solid effort that is sure to please the many readers of Griffin's fiction. Book-of-the-Month Club dividend selection. ~--Steve Weingartner
