Review by Kirkus Book Review

When Nicky finds that he hasn't enough money to throw a birthday party he puts buddy Albert (BIG AL, his T-shirt proclaims) up to getting his other friends--Ann and Jenny and Jan and Morris and Doris and Dan--to give him a surprise party. Nicky is so demanding--ordering cake and ice cream, special balloons and snappers, and presents from everyone--that it almost seems like just deserts when he arrives home from his tuba lesson at the appointed time and finds an empty house, But--surprise!--the party is at Albert's house. Thus Prager fools Nicky after all and readers, too--a small twist, but probably sufficient for the occasion. And the dialogue doesn't lag. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
