Gr. 4-6. Originally published in 1907, this book concerns four likable English children and their adventures with a magic ring. It's hard to imagine a more appealing showcase for Nesbit's fantasy than this handsome volume, which features paper of fine quality, pages with generous margins, and a dozen plates with full-page illustrations. With fine, cross-hatched lines tinted in luminous colors, Zelinsky's artwork is as lively as the story and very much of the period. While the novel is not one of Nesbit's best, this beautiful book is recommended for larger fiction collections. ~--Carolyn Phelan

Originally published in 1907, one of E. Nesbit's most fascinating tales of magic has new illustrations that echo the theme in their fine reconciliation of fact and fantasy. An excellent book. Review by Kirkus Book Review

One of the landmarks of children's fantasy: an enduring favorite first published in 1907, now reissued in the ``Books of Wonder'' series with a dozen splendid new color illustrations that extend an award-winning artist's already extraordinary range. Skillfully selecting pivotal, magical moments, Zelinsky again uses his trademark dynamic perspectives and figures, while depicting the intriguing castle itself in enchantingly imaginative detail. A delightful blend of period flavor, contemporary sensibility, and innovative composition. (Fiction. 8-12)
