Review by Booklist Review

Ages 5-7. Three trees growing on a hilltop dream of grand futures, but when they're claimed by woodcutters, other things happen. One becomes a manger that holds the Christ child, another a humble fishing boat that carries Jesus and his followers, and the third is cut into stout timbers that become Jesus' cross. All three trees realize the power of God's love and know that what became of them was far better than the grandiose dreams they held in their youth. Flap copy labels this religious story as a traditional folktale, though no sources are given. Its message of the power of God's love to transform and renew is consistent with the beliefs of many denominations, and it will please those looking for stories with a religious orientation. The accompanying paintings, in strong colors and bold shapes, are accomplished, projecting a quiet strength that suits the story. --Denise Wilms
