Gr. 1-3. A Step into Reading book about the Pilgrims--their journey, arrival, suffering, and eventual community--this will appeal both to beginners and to reluctant readers in the upper grades who want a book on early colonial times. The settlers' changing attitudes toward native Americans adds tension to the narrative: first everyone's afraid and wary; then they get to know each other and work together; and finally they celebrate Thanksgiving with a great feast. The dramatic color illustrations convey a lot about how things were on the ship, in the new settlement, and at the party. The constant use of the present tense is sometimes jarring in a history book, but this will get wide use across the curriculum. ~--Hazel Rochman

A text reminiscent of basal readers tells the story of the first Thanksgiving from the launching of the 'Mayflower' to the extended celebration. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
