Ages 5-8. From the dependable Let's-Read-and-Find-Out science series, this picture book describes the earthbound segment of the water cycle, beginning with melting snow on a mountain and following the resulting brook as it flows into a stream, a river, and finally the ocean. Along the way, Dorros introduces concepts such as erosion and water pollution and briefly discusses waterfalls, canyons, reservoirs, dams, and deltas. Cheerful, informal line-and-watercolor artwork competently illustrates the text. Children and animals lend interest to the scenes. Primary grade teachers may find this a useful book. ~--Carolyn Phelan

K-Gr 4-- An excellent presentation of introductory material about water. Addressing readers in the second-person ``you,'' it clearly explains such terms as ``brook,'' ``stream,'' ``river,'' and ``delta,'' and illustrates such basic concepts as where water comes from, how it travels, and where it goes. The illustrations are simple, almost childlike, in soft colors. In a few cases, however, it is difficult to distinguish between water and land because the contrast in tone is subtle; otherwise, the artwork is pleasant and effective. Comparable titles include From Ice to Rain (Carolrhoda, 1981) by Marlene Reidel and Diane Tippell's Water (Silver Burdett, 1986). --Rosie Peasley, Somerset School, Modesto, CA (c) Copyright 2010. An attractive, accessible look at the travels of water, from snow to the ocean, via brooks, streams, and rivers. Brief mention is made of floods, dams, pollution, and formations such as deltas and meanders. Attractively illustrated in pen-and-ink and watercolor. From HORN BOOK 1991, (c) Copyright 2010.
