Gr. 2-4. In a brief, easy-to-read text, Adler describes the life and accomplishments of a famous American who helped hundreds to escape slavery during the 1850s. He relates several important incidents in Tubman's early life that led her to feel strongly about liberty and, ultimately, to flee from her Maryland plantation home to freedom in Pennsylvania. The author also discusses Tubman's many trips back and forth on the Underground Railroad and her activities as a nurse and Union spy during the Civil War. Byrd's appealing, colorful illustrations convey the quiet dignity of a brave heroine. Pair this with Winter's Follow the Drinking Gourd [BKL D 15 88], another account of the Underground Railroad. ~--Kay Weisman

PreS-Gr 3-This solid entry (HolidayHouse, 1992) in David Adler's picture book biography series transfers smoothly to audio. With a well-paced, precisely spoken narration by Gail Nelson, this very truncated story of the life of Harriet Tubman-from slavery to leader of the Underground Railroad-relates the struggles and the dangers she endured. Subtle background noises add to the competent storytelling and a couple of brief songs are beautifully sung. In-text quotes by Harriet Tubman are read in a different voice with a southern accent, making it seem as though Tubman is speaking. An important dates appendix is also read aloud. One side of the recording has page-turn signals. A spare, yet important audio production.- Jennifer Iserman, Dakota County Library, Burnhaven Branch, Burnsville, MN (c) Copyright 2010. A brief, simple text relates the life of Harriet Tubman, who was born a slave and led others out of slavery on the Underground Railroad. The illustrations are murky and undistinguished.
