Two seasoned hikers combine their expertise in this valuable guide, presenting oodles of practical information and tips for beginning and veteran backpackers alike. The chattily written advice begins with Ross and Gladfelter's urging the purchase of quality equipment from a reputable supplier who can help determine personal needs. Chapters dealing with backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, and other gear contain hints to help hikers pack correctly, dress comfortably, and maintain equipment. Practical cooking suggestions and recipes for cookies, breads, and candy are also included, as are details on itinerary planning, resupplying, sanitation, and first aid. Immensely readable and chock-full of levelheaded, workable suggestions and information, this excellent companion deserves a spot in every library where trailblazers congregate. ~--Sue-Ellen Beauregard
